Ms. Anne Jenkins Buntzler founded the American School of Puebla with the support of Dr. Feland Meadows, Jr. on September 1st, 1942, in order to provide education in English to the American families that lived in Puebla.
The School officially started on February 1st, 1943 at a rented house located on 17 Poniente 901. There were 75 students that school year.
In the summer of 1945, H. Stephen Stockmeyer was summoned to take on the post of Superintendent. The School moved to 15 Sur 710 the same year.
In the 1946 school year, enrollment reached 150, so a bigger building was rented on 13 Sur 2102. Students started attending junior high school the same year.
A new building was finished on February 1949 on 9 Poniente 2709 and classes started there on the same year. Enrollment reached 400 students.
In August 1949, Harold House was named Superintendent. The Mexican Ministry of Education (SEP) recognized the Junior High School under his leadership.
Ramon T. Mosley was named Superintendent on February 1956. Enrollment increased, so in 1958 additions were made to the original building to house arts, music and science lab classes.
Dr. Max Tudor replaced Mr. Mosley in 1961. Ms. Anne Jenkins Buntzler made arrangements with her brother, Mr. William O. Jenkins, to build a second school building to address the growing enrollment.
Before completing construction, Mr. Jenkins passed away and Ms. Buntzler spearheaded the School’s transition to become a well-established institution with solid legal structures. Mr. Manuel Espinosa Yglesias, successor of Mr. Jenkins as President of the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation, created the American School Foundation of Puebla and transferred the School’s assets to the Foundation.
Dr. Tudor left the Superintendent’s Office in 1965 and Dr. John Dobson replaced him.
The new campus that Mr. Jenkins had planned was built between 1965 and 1970. Cultivated fields surrounded it, and it was located in front of what is now 31 Poniente.
Ms. Buntzler retired in 1969 and moved with her husband back to the US. The Commerce School started on the same year.
Dr. John Dobson took a post at the Education Department at UDLA and Dr. Chaffee was invited to head the Superintendent’s Office.
In 1976, the Mary Street Jenkins Foundation assigned the building in Colonia Huexotitla to the Junior High School.
The Ánimas buildings were remodeled between 1980 and 2000. The classrooms were enlarged and new classrooms were added.
A spacious and modern gym was built between 1995 and 2004. It has two regulation basketball courts, a modern stage, and a capacity of 1000 people for graduations, concerts and plays.
In March 2006, the School obtained the authorization to offer its three programs: PYP (Primary Years Programme), MYP (Middle Years Programme), and the Diploma.
Dr. Arthur Chaffee retired in July 2006 and Dr. Francisco Galicia Ortega, the current Superintendent, replaced him. |
